As a glass processing manufacturer, we have extensive experience in tempered glass production and are well aware that spontaneous self-explosion of tempered glass is not accidental. The core causes can be broadly categorized into three types, all of which can be effectively prevented and controlled through the production and processing stages.

 Self-destructing tempered glass (6)

The first category is intrinsic impurities—nickel sulfide crystals that have inadvertently mixed into the glass raw materials. These are the primary cause of spontaneous breakage. Such impurities remain stable at room temperature, but when subjected to temperature changes, they undergo volumetric expansion, disrupting the internal stress balance within the glass and triggering shattering.

The second category is processing defects: if the edges of the glass are not precisely ground and chamfered, or if microcracks are present, or if the temperature and cooling rate during tempering are uneven, stress concentrations may occur, making the glass prone to spontaneous breakage during subsequent use. The third category is hidden damage: during production and handling, the glass surface may suffer minor impacts that leave scratches barely visible to the naked eye. When subjected to subsequent stress or temperature changes, these scratches can become the initiation points for spontaneous breakage.

The key prevention and control measures at our factory are: selecting glass substrates with higher purity to minimize the inclusion of impurities; and adding a homogenization step after tempering to release impurity-induced stresses in advance.

We strictly control processing details, carefully grinding and chamfering the edges to prevent microcracks. During handling, we use soft protective materials to avoid surface impacts and scratches. At the same time, we also advise downstream customers to avoid squeezing the glass edges during installation and to leave expansion joints, thereby reducing self-explosion caused by external stress.
