Laminated glass is a composite material made by bonding two or more glass sheets together using interlayer materials (such as polyvinyl butyral, abbreviated as PVB, etc.). Its conventional thickness parameters mainly involve the thickness of the substrate glass and the thickness of the PVB film.

1. Substrate glass thickness

The thickness of the substrate glass for laminated glass varies, with common specifications including:

5mm, 6mm

8mm

10mm

12mm

15mm, 19mm

In addition, the maximum size of laminated glass can reach 2440mm×5500mm, and the minimum size is 250mm×250mm. Common types of laminated glass include 5+5 (generally not exceeding 1524mm×1830mm), 6+6 (generally not exceeding 1830mm×2134mm), 8+8 or 10+10 (generally not exceeding 2400mm×3660mm), where the numbers indicate the thickness of the glass.

2. PVB film thickness

The choice of PVB film thickness is usually based on the thickness of the substrate glass as well as the size and purpose of the glass. Here are some common PVB film thickness parameters:

Ordinary laminated glass

When the substrate glass thickness is ≤6mm, the PVB film thickness is 0.38mm (regardless of whether the short side exceeds 800mm).

When the substrate glass thickness is 8mm, the PVB film thickness is 0.38mm (short side ≤800mm) or 0.76mm (short side >800mm).

When the substrate glass thickness is 10mm, the PVB film thickness is 0.76mm (regardless of whether the short side exceeds 800mm).

When the substrate glass thickness is 12mm, the PVB film thickness is 1.14mm (regardless of whether the short side exceeds 800mm).

When the substrate glass thickness is 15mm or 19mm, the PVB film thickness is 1.52mm (regardless of whether the short side exceeds 800mm).

Flat tempered and heat strengthened laminated glass

For flat tempered and heat strengthened laminated glass, due to the wave and bow deformation that occurs during the tempering process, the choice of PVB film thickness needs to be more cautious. Here are some common thickness parameters:

When the substrate glass thickness is ≤6mm and the short side ≤800mm, the PVB film thickness is 0.76mm; when the short side is between 800mm and 1500mm, it is 1.14mm; when the short side >1500mm, it is 1.52mm.

When the substrate glass thickness is between 8mm and 12mm, the PVB film thickness for short sides ≤800mm is 1.14mm; for short sides between 800mm and 1500mm and short sides >1500mm, it is 1.52mm.

When the substrate glass thickness is ≥15mm, regardless of the short side length, the PVB film thickness is 1.52mm or 2.28mm (for larger glass sizes).

Bent tempered, heat strengthened laminated glass and heat bent laminated glass

Bent tempered laminated glass and heat strengthened laminated glass usually have a thicker PVB film than ordinary laminated glass due to their curvature. Here are some common thickness parameters:

When the substrate glass thickness is ≤8mm and the radius of curvature R >3m, the PVB film thickness is 2.28mm; when the radius of curvature R ≤3m, it is 3.04mm.

When the substrate glass thickness is ≥10mm, regardless of the radius of curvature, the PVB film thickness is 3.04mm.

For heat bent laminated glass, the choice of PVB film thickness is similar to that of ordinary laminated glass, but the curvature radius of the glass also needs to be considered.

It should be noted that the above thickness parameters are only common specifications and are not absolutely fixed.

In practical applications, the thickness parameters of laminated glass may be adjusted according to specific needs, such as increasing the thickness of the PVB film to improve the impact resistance of the glass, etc. At the same time, when purchasing laminated glass, it is important to ensure that the quality of the glass and PVB film meets relevant standards to ensure the safety and reliability of the product.
